CHAPTER 11 OF 17
Comparing platform fee structures
More than one number to look at
Chapter 6 covered fund-level fees — the expense ratio an ETF itself charges. This chapter is about a different layer: the fees a platform charges you for using it. Two platforms offering access to the same halal ETF can still cost noticeably different amounts once you add up custody, currency conversion, and trading costs.
None of this is about which platform is "best" — that depends on your situation and each platform's current pricing. It's about knowing which categories of fees to look for, so you can compare any platform's own published rates on equal footing.
The usual categories
Most platforms serving GCC-based investors charge some combination of the following. Not every platform charges every category, and rates change, so treat this as a checklist rather than a price list.
- Custody or account fees — a flat or percentage-based charge for holding your investments, sometimes waived below a certain balance.
- FX conversion fees — charged when your local currency (AED, SAR, QAR, and similar) is converted to USD to buy US-listed ETFs.
- Trading or transaction fees — charged per order, sometimes zero for standard trades, sometimes a small fixed or percentage fee.

Why small differences add up
A 0.5% FX fee sounds tiny on a single monthly SIP contribution. Applied every month for years, on top of custody fees and the fund's own expense ratio, it compounds the same way returns do — quietly, in the background. This is why it's worth reading a platform's fee schedule once, carefully, rather than assuming "low fees" without checking each category.
Questions worth asking a platform
Before funding an account, a platform's own pricing page or support team should be able to answer: Is there a custody fee, and is it flat or percentage-based? What's the FX conversion rate or fee when funding in a local currency? Is there a fee per trade, and does it differ for SIP-style recurring orders versus one-off purchases?
See the fee layers together
The SIP calculator lets you enter an expense ratio alongside your monthly amount, so you can see how fund-level fees affect a projection over time.
See your projectionWhat to remember
Platform costs usually come from three places: custody, FX conversion, and trading fees, on top of the ETF's own expense ratio. No single number tells the whole story — check each category on a platform's own pricing page, since rates vary and change over time.
Three common fee categories, combining into one overall cost — rates vary by platform.
